Bank of England building — an illustrative image

An exchange rate expresses one currency’s value in another. The difference between a bank’s buying and selling rates is called the spread. The official rate need not match the rate actually offered.

Why does this matter?

This difference matters for imported goods and foreign currency liabilities.

Which markets might be affected?

Effects may differ across currencies, bonds, equities and commodities. Whether a decision was expected, the time horizon and other economic indicators all matter.
